NANNY/FAMILY INTERVIEW TIPS

The following are some helpful tips to make an in-home arrangement more successful. Please read this over and if any questions should arise please feel free to call us.

Different Positions:

-American Au Pair/Mother's Helper: Usually work in a situation where there is some form of supervision. The background includes babysitting for non-related families. Salaries range from $275.00 to $300.00, depending on experience.

-Professional Nanny: Are in charge of meeting all necessary needs of the children, having either an extensive background in childcare work or, a four year degree, in a childcare related field. Average salaries range from $300.00 to $1,200.00 a week.

The more careful thought and attention families and caregivers give to spelling out the details of the caregiver's role in the family, the more successful the in-home arrangement is likely to be. The following areas touch on the basics of every in-home situation.

Job Specifics:

The majority of childcare positions have many and varied responsibilities. Care of the children is, of course, the primary responsibility. Occasionally light housekeeping is usually an additional responsibility. Cleaning up after the children can be, and usually is, part of the job. Transportation of the children to activities, appointments, or other necessary meetings is also a common duty. Some meal preparation and the running of errands can be part of the job description as well. On the average, a child care professional works about 40-50 hours a week. If extra hours are needed, there should be advanced notice given, and compensation made in the form of extra time off or overtime pay.

All job related duties should be discussed between the family and the nanny in depth before arrival to ensure the absence of any "gray areas." It is highly recommended that the employer and employee write up all job specifics in a formal agreement that can be referred to later if any questions should arise. It is very important that both parties understand each other's expectations. Communication is the key to a successful relationship!

Privacy:

It is important that both the caregiver and the family have a sense of privacy. The majority of in-home childcare providers have their own room where they may go to receive the space they need. It is also recommended that the nanny give the family time to spend together. This is not to say that the nanny can not or should not be involved in any activities outside their job duties. One should not take it personally if the employer or employee would like some time away. Everyone is different and a good match will rely on mutual respect and understanding.

Airfare:

Since we work with nannies and families all across the nation, nannies often have to relocate to their new position. For this reason, the issue of travel expenses does come up. We suggest that the nannies pay their airfare and make arrangements to have the family reimburse them after a certain period of time, usually after 60 days.

Salary, Benefits, and Work Agreement:

Salary generally ranges anywhere from $275.00 to $1,000.00 per week, plus room and board. This is, of course, negotiable and is determined by the amount of experience that the nanny has had. The pay schedule may be in either one or two week intervals. Nannies usually receive major holidays off as well as two weeks paid vacation per year. Discussing these issues together will help you to come to an agreement that is best for all concerned.

Making a Decision:

Making a decision such as the one you are about to make can be very difficult. There are many factors that must be taken into consideration. In order to make this decision a little easier for you we would like to give you some idea of the kind of things you will want to know:

Questions to ask the nannies:

-"What kind of childcare experience do you have?"

-"What kind of position are you looking for?"

-"What is your family background?"

-"What kind of interests and hobbies do you have?"

Questions to ask the families:

-"What are the children like? Hobbies, interests, favorite activities?"

-"What are the responsibilities involved with the children?
  Any special needs?"

-"'What are the parents work schedules?"

-"What rules apply to you while staying in the home?"

Having an open line of communication is the key to a positive match. All expectations and needs must be made clear and fully understood by both parties.
